Polish Unemployment Rises to 5.5%, Driven by Workplace Dismissals
Warsaw, Poland – Poland’s unemployment rate climbed to 5.5% in August, up from 5.4% in July and a 0.5 percentage point increase since May, according to data released by the Central Statistical Office (GUS). This rise coincides with a notable increase in declared workplace dismissals, with 76.2 thousand employees slated for layoff by the end of June – including 59.5 thousand from the public sector. In contrast, employers declared 17.8 thousand exemptions at the end of June 2024, with only 400 from the public sector.
The Ministry of Family, Labor and Social Policy attributes the increase in the unemployment rate to changes implemented in June regarding the functioning of employment offices, suggesting these changes broadened the scope of registered unemployed individuals.
