Pokémon Go: Mewtwo Returns This Summer + Possible Mythical Pokémon Debut

Pokémon Proceed players will have another opportunity to capture the Legendary Pokémon Mewtwo this summer, developers announced at a press event in Tokyo on Thursday. The return of Mewtwo, a highly sought-after creature, comes after a four-year wait for many fans, with the last widespread opportunity to battle and catch it occurring in July 2022.

The announcement was made during a presentation detailing plans for this year’s Go Fest celebrations, with artwork displayed at the event confirming Mewtwo’s return. A spokesperson for the game, speaking to Japanese Pokémon outlet rocketnews24go, stated, “I can’t say anything specific, but look forward to the Pokémon featured in the key visual. Especially Mewtwo — I consider it’ll be heart-pounding excitement for people who’ve been participating in GO Fest since the early days.”

Whereas Mewtwo’s Shadow form was briefly available in March 2024, this summer marks the return of the standard Mewtwo to the game. The artwork likewise hints at the debut of a new Mythical Pokémon, with speculation focusing on Zeraora, a creature that recently gained a new Mega Evolution. The subtle inclusion of blue lightning bolts in the 2026 Go Fest logo has fueled this theory.

The return of Mewtwo also raises the possibility of finally introducing its Mega Evolutions – Mega Mewtwo X and Y – to Pokémon Go. These forms remain the only missing Mega Evolutions from the original set of Mega Pokémon. The game is already preparing to introduce Mega Malamar and Mega Victreebell later this month, as part of content tied to the upcoming release of Pokémon Legends: Z-A.

The timing of the announcement coincides with significant milestones for the Pokémon franchise: the 30th anniversary of Pokémon and the 10th anniversary of Pokémon Go. Developers are expected to reveal further details about celebrations surrounding these anniversaries on Pokémon Day, February 27, including potential announcements regarding the next generation of Pokémon games and creatures.

The Tokyo event is one of three in-person Go Fest meetups planned for this summer, preceding the global Go Fest celebration. While the artwork specifically highlights Mewtwo’s presence at the Tokyo event, industry observers believe it is unlikely the creature will be exclusive to that location, given the widespread anticipation for its return.
