Pojeon‌ House: A Curving Brick and Concrete Sanctuary Embraces a ‌Beloved Garden in South Korea

Seoul, South‌ Korea – A recently completed home near Seoul,‍ dubbed “Pojeon ‌House” (meaning ⁤”a‍ house that embraces the field”), offers a striking example of how architecture can prioritize both ‍privacy and connection to nature. Designed by local studios‌ Sukchulmok and BRBB Architects, the 128-square-meter residence is a stunning response to the needs of an elderly couple who wished to maintain ⁣their long-cultivated vegetable‍ garden while creating a peaceful, secluded living space.

The design ‌centers around two interlocking, curved volumes constructed from a harmonious blend of brick and concrete. This unique form ⁤presents a deliberately understated facade to the road – a “fortress wall,” as ⁢described by Sukchulmok’s lead architect Hyunhee park – while simultaneously opening ⁣up ⁢to a lush⁢ central garden through expansive⁤ sliding⁤ glass doors.

“The core concept ⁢of Pojeon House lies ⁣in the gesture of two volumes merging together to embrace the field, ultimately becoming one unified mass,” Park explained to Dezeen. The architects⁢ achieved a⁣ visual cohesion by repeating textures wiht ⁢a consistent rhythm, ⁤creating a singular, ‌flowing form.

The home’s design cleverly⁤ balances the couple’s desire for seclusion with their deep connection to their garden. The curving structure physically embraces the existing vegetable⁤ patch, integrating it seamlessly into the living space. This thoughtful approach creates a tranquil haven, allowing the residents to enjoy their ‌garden in privacy ⁤and comfort.

Pojeon House ⁣is a testament to the power‌ of sensitive design,‍ demonstrating how architecture can enhance and celebrate the natural world while providing a ⁤secure ⁣and peaceful retreat.
