Point of Law Wins Melbourne Cup as Ciaron Maher Claims Historic Trifecta
Point of Law Wins Melbourne Cup After Sale by King Charles III
Point of Law won the Melbourne Cup at Flemington on November 3, 2026, in only his sixth career start, after being sold by Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla to Australian interests, according to AFP. The victory delivered an unprecedented training feat when his new stable filled the entire top three positions.
Trainer Ciaron Maher achieved the first trifecta in the 166 editions of the Melbourne Cup, as Point of Law led home stablemates Zahrann and Juja Kibo. The win marked Maher’s second triumph in Australia’s most famous race and a first success for jockey Ethan Brown.
From Royal Stables to Australian Flemington Glory
Point of Law began his racing life in Britain under the ownership of King Charles and Queen Camilla before being purchased by Maher. AFP described the transaction as an acquisition from the monarch, turning a routine bloodstock sale into racing folklore.
The colt made his Australian debut a winning one by claiming the Geelong Cup. That lead-up performance established him as a short-priced favourite for the 3,200-metre staying test at Flemington, despite having never previously raced over that distance.
The race itself developed through unusual early drama. Another Maher runner, Royal Supremacy, broke from barrier 21 and opened up a massive lead during the running, stretching his advantage to 20 lengths with 1,000 metres remaining.
Royal Supremacy maintained a commanding 12-length lead at the 400-metre mark, according to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. However, the long Flemington straight eventually took its toll on the front-runner.

Ridden patiently by Brown, Point of Law emerged from the chasing pack and swept past the leaders with approximately 150 metres left to run. The winning margin was a decisive 3.75 lengths.
Maher Stable Dominates Historic Race Podium
Maher fielded seven runners in the endurance test, demonstrating extraordinary depth across his stable. Behind the historic winner Point of Law and runner-up Zahrann, Juja Kibo took third place.

Maher’s other entrants also performed prominently. Royal Supremacy held on for fifth place, while Shockletz finished sixth, leaving Mr Monaco as the only stable runner failing to make an impact in 17th position.
This is what the Melbourne Cup is all about,
Maher stated to the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, highlighting the remarkable achievement of dominating the podium in Australia’s defining race.
