Pixel Phones Get Dedicated Public Transport Mode
Google has quietly rolled out a dedicated “Commute” mode for Pixel phones, offering users customized settings for when traveling via public transportation. The novel feature, located within the phone’s settings menu (Settings > Modes), automatically adjusts device behavior based on the user’s travel status.
The Commute mode allows users to control audio output – selecting between on, off, or vibrate-only options – and manage Bluetooth connectivity, enabling automatic disabling during commutes. Notification settings are also customizable, permitting users to filter alerts to only those from designated contacts and applications. Display properties can be modified within the mode as well.
While the feature has launched, full functionality appears to be limited, at least initially, to certain regions. Android Authority reported that the mode is intended to learn a user’s regular commuting patterns over several weeks, proactively displaying relevant information on the lock screen and home screen. This functionality requires users to input their home address and grant the system access to location data. As of today, however, this predictive element is not yet active for all users.
The introduction of Commute mode aligns with Google’s broader investment in mobile technology for public transportation. PIXEL has equipped vehicles with passenger information systems, linear navigation systems, video surveillance, and even disinfection technology, according to the company. PIXEL will be showcasing its latest innovations, including the “NVXNUMX Eraser,” at the inaugural international public transport trade fair TRANSEXPO.
Google’s Pixel phones utilize Bluetooth connectivity, allowing for seamless pairing with various devices. Once paired, devices can automatically reconnect, with a Bluetooth icon appearing at the top of the screen when active. The process for connecting and managing Bluetooth devices is accessible through the phone’s settings menu.
