Amsterdam, Netherlands - Pieter, a 63-year-old man, is challenging conventional perceptions of Alzheimer’s disease by openly sharing his experience of being diagnosed before experiencing notable memory loss, and finding increased joy and fulfillment through volunteer work. His story highlights the potential for a positive outlook even in the face of a life-altering diagnosis, and underscores the importance of finding purpose and connection.
Pieter discovered he had Alzheimer’s,a disease typically associated with memory decline,in a surprising turn of events. Rather then succumbing too fear, he embraced the diagnosis as a catalyst for change, allowing him to shed professional frustrations and dedicate himself to activities that bring him genuine happiness. “You can say that my resilience is very great, although that is strange to say about yourself. But it is true,” Pieter stated. “Dementia is a fear for many people, and of course there are no medicines against it yet. but I am very down-to-earth: I know this, and now I can live with it.”
Currently, Pieter volunteers as a language buddy for a woman who fled Israel, assisting her with Dutch conversation. He also reads to a 5-year-old boy through the VoorleesExpress and helps an 11-year-old boy with his homework. He describes all of these activities as “great fun to do.” Beyond direct interaction, Pieter is documenting the life story of a couple with dementia he met at the Amsterdam UMC, helping them create a legacy for their grandchildren. He also shares his personal journey through a blog on Dementie.nl.
“Otherwise I might have continued to struggle with work that just didn’t work out, that would certainly not have made me happy,” Pieter explained. ”And then I would not have known all the people I now help, while I am so happy about that. of word. I can really say that now, because of the diagnosis, I am happier than before.”
