Phoenix Pride is facing a $350,000 budget shortfall after several sponsors withdrew financial support following criticism from former President Donald Trump regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives. The funding crisis threatens programming for the 2025 Phoenix Pride Festival and other year-round community events.
The withdrawals stem from Trump’s recent public attacks on organizations embracing DEI policies, prompting sponsors-primarily large corporations-to reassess their charitable giving. Phoenix Pride organizers report a wave of cancellations beginning in late November, leaving them scrambling to mitigate the financial impact. The shortfall represents roughly 15% of the organization’s annual operating budget, jeopardizing vital services for the LGBTQ+ community in Arizona.
“We’ve seen a direct correlation between the former president’s statements and the decisions of some of our sponsors,” saeid Phoenix Pride Executive Director Justin Jones. “Its deeply concerning that political pressure is impacting our ability to serve our community.”
Phoenix Pride provides a range of programs, including the annual festival, scholarships, support groups, and advocacy efforts. The organization estimates that the funding gap will necessitate cuts to festival entertainment, reduced community outreach, and potential staff reductions. Organizers are actively seeking new sponsors and launching a fundraising campaign to offset the losses.
The situation highlights a growing trend of political polarization affecting non-profit organizations and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups nationwide. DEI initiatives, aimed at fostering inclusive environments, have become a focal point of conservative criticism, with opponents arguing they promote discrimination.
