Philippines Defeats Thailand 2-1 to Close ASEAN Cup Campaign

Philippines Defeats Thailand 2-1 to Close ASEAN Cup Campaign

October 3, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

The Philippine Men’s National Football Team secured a 2-1 victory over regional powerhouse Thailand on Friday at Si Jalak Harupat Stadium in Bandung, Indonesia, concluding their 2026 FIFA ASEAN Cup campaign with a win. Bjorn Martin Kristensen scored both goals for the Philippines, finding the net in the 3rd and 68th minutes.

Heavy rain delayed the kickoff by an hour and left a slippery pitch. The Philippines seized an early advantage when Paul Tabinas delivered a cross from the right flank, allowing Kristensen to finish from close range inside the penalty area for the opening goal. The strike marked the first time Thailand conceded a goal in the tournament.

Thailand struggled to find rhythm during the opening half, while the Philippine defense disrupted midfield passing. In the 55th minute, Thailand leveled the score at 1-1 when Iklas Sanron collected a pass from Seksan Ratree and curled a shot past the goalkeeper. Jude Soonsup-Bell missed a subsequent one-on-one opportunity that could have put Thailand ahead.

The missed chance proved costly. Andre Leipold drove down the right flank in the 68th minute and crossed into the box, where Kristensen finished from close range to claim his second goal of the match. The brace brought Kristensen’s international tally to 16 goals in 20 appearances for the Philippines.

Squad Rotations Shape the Final Group Match

Having already secured a place in the final with previous victories over Pakistan and Vietnam, Thailand rested several regular starters. Chanathip Songkrasin, Sarach Yooyen, and Nicholas Mickelson began the match on the bench. Following the second Philippine goal, Thailand introduced Chanathip and other regular players to increase pressure, but failed to find a second equalizer.

Spin.ph noted that the victory marked only the third time in history that the Philippines defeated Thailand, echoing a similar 2-1 group-stage result during the 2024 ASEAN Mitsubishi Electric Cup. Despite the loss, Thailand retained first place in Group B with six points and advanced to the championship match.
