DATU ODIN SINSUAT, MAGUINDANAO DEL NORTE – A Philippine Army investigation is underway following the death of 22-year-old Private Charlie Patigayon during what officials are calling “reception rites” at the 6th Infantry Battalion headquarters in Barangay Capiton on July 30th. The incident has prompted the relief of two officers and 19 enlisted personnel as the Army pledges full accountability.
Patigayon, a Kolambugan, Lanao del Norte native, reportedly collapsed during routine reception exercises – a series of physical and mental challenges new recruits undergo upon joining a unit.He was promptly transported to a local medical facility but was pronounced dead the following day, July 31st. The specific nature of the exercises Patigayon was participating in at the time of the incident remains under investigation.
Army spokesperson Colonel Louie Dema-ala emphasized the PA’s commitment to justice, stating, “We assure Pvt. Patigayon’s family that the PA is committed to pursuing justice. Should the investigation confirm wrongdoing, those responsible will be held fully accountable under the military justice system and all applicable laws.”
This incident brings renewed scrutiny to the practice of reception rites within the Philippine Army. While intended to build camaraderie and assess a new soldier’s resilience, these traditions have historically been linked to instances of hazing and abuse. The Anti-Hazing Act of 2018 explicitly prohibits practices that endanger the safety and well-being of personnel, and the PA maintains a “zero-tolerance policy” regarding such activities.
Beyond the immediate investigation, the PA is providing financial and logistical support to Patigayon’s family, including assistance with funeral arrangements and potential benefits. “While no form of compensation can ever replace the life of a soldier, we are committed to honoring Pvt. Patigayon’s service and to (ease) the burden on his loved ones,” Dema-ala added. The Army has not yet disclosed the amount of assistance being offered.
