Perth Zoo Elephant Move Delayed: Putra Mas Arrival on Hold

Perth Zoo will not be receiving two new rhinos as initially planned, but the redevelopment of its African Savanna exhibit will proceed as scheduled. Putra Mas, a rhino previously slated for relocation, will remain in Perth while alternative breeding opportunities are evaluated.

The decision to keep Putra Mas in Perth is based on scientific considerations regarding his genetic contribution to regional breeding programs. “There is quite a lot of science that goes into…what his genetics can contribute to the regional program, so we need to look what are the best options for him moving forward,” stated Mr. Lemon.

Despite the change in Putra Mas’s relocation plans, the zoo’s ambitious $30 million upgrade to the African Savanna exhibit remains on track. “We still have grand plans for that, but (the delayed move) is not holding it up at all and won’t effect the timing of that,” Mr. Lemon confirmed.

Perth Zoo has been undergoing significant renovations in recent years, including the recent opening of a new gibbon enclosure.
