Oklahoma Lands Highly Touted Wide Receiver Despite Early Doubts
NORMAN, OKLAHOMA – Oklahoma football coach Brent Venables‘ persistence paid off Wednesday with the signing of wide receiver Ryan Petit, a player Venables believes can contribute instantly to the Sooners’ offense. Petit committed to Oklahoma despite an initial lukewarm evaluation, showcasing the program’s evolving recruiting strategy and addressing a need for depth at the position.
The Sooners signed four wide receivers in the latest recruiting class – Petit, Jahsier Rogers (Delaware), Daniel Odom (California), and Zizi Okwufulueze (Owasso, Oklahoma). Though, Venables specifically highlighted Petit’s potential for early playing time, a testament to his physical and mental readiness. With seniors Deion Burks and Keontez Lewis poised to depart, opportunities will be available for newcomers to make an impact.
Venables described Petit as a “freakazoid” – a term of endearment signifying his exceptional athleticism – and expressed confidence in his ability to elevate the wide receiver group. “He’s gonna jump into a great group, and really feel like he’s – from a physical standpoint and a mental standpoint - he’s gonna be able to jump in right away and help make that position immediately better,” Venables stated.
Petit’s arrival signals a commitment to bolstering the Sooners’ receiving corps and provides a promising addition as the program continues its rebuilding efforts under Venables. The incoming class aims to inject fresh talent and competition into a position group facing turnover, setting the stage for a dynamic future for Oklahoma football.
