Pérez-Reverte Defends Amenábar‘s ‘The Captive‘ as “Free and Brave” Amid Historical Debate
Madrid – Author Arturo Pérez-Reverte has publicly praised Alejandro Amenábar’s new film, The Captive, offering a surprising endorsement as the historical drama sparks controversy over its portrayal of Miguel de Cervantes and subtle exploration of the author’s sexuality. Reverte, known for his own historically-rooted and often provocative novels, described the film as “a splendid, pleasant, well-made movie” and lauded Amenábar’s vision as ”free and sincere (and very brave).”
The film, which focuses on Cervantes’ years as a captive in Algiers, has already drawn criticism from conservative sectors for its nuanced approach to the literary icon.Specifically, the final scene – depicting a defeated protagonist – has been labeled “Manichean” by some. Beyond the historical adventure, The Captive also subtly suggests a possible homosexual side to Cervantes, a depiction that is fueling debate over historical accuracy versus artistic license.
Pérez-Reverte acknowledged the contentious elements, noting that “two controversial minutes will give much to talk and not like everyone,” but firmly defended Amenábar’s creative choices. The author, himself no stranger to historical reinterpretation and morally complex characters like his Captain Alatriste, recognized a kindred spirit in the director’s “narrative courage.”
In a post on his X account, Reverte recommended the film, adding that he would continue to share his opinions on contemporary fiction. When pressed for his favorite films, he cited Rio bravo, Have, and The Game Rule as standouts.
