Perez Hilton Hospitalized: Sepsis & Ulcer After Flu Complications
Celebrity blogger Perez Hilton, whose real name is Mario Armando Lavandeira Jr., revealed a three-week hospitalization in Las Vegas stemming from complications initially believed to be the flu. Hilton detailed his ordeal in a video posted Monday, explaining that neglecting to accept prescribed medication with food led to a perforated ulcer and subsequent sepsis.
According to Hilton, the health crisis began with a week-long bout of the flu. Despite taking medication, he failed to consume it with food, a critical oversight that triggered the development of an ulcer. The ulcer ultimately perforated, leading to a life-threatening case of sepsis. Prior to hospitalization, Hilton experienced severe stomach pain, escalating to the point where he was unable to walk and required ambulance transport to Southern Hills Hospital.
The hospitalization involved five days of observation before Hilton underwent laparoscopic surgery to address the perforation. Further complications arose during his recovery, requiring doctors to drain fluid from his lungs and treat a secondary infection contracted while in the hospital. Hilton described the recovery process as “unhurried,” characterizing the final week of his 21-day stay as “hell.”
Even after being discharged, Hilton continues to receive treatment via intravenous medication, alongside antibacterial and antifungal prescriptions. In his video, he acknowledged the physical toll the experience has taken, noting ongoing swelling and abdominal distension. He expressed gratitude to the medical staff at Southern Hills Hospital, stating, “I would not be home already if it weren’t for you.”
Hilton, who moved to Las Vegas in January 2023, shared photos from his hospital bed on Saturday, March 21, teasing a more detailed account of his experience. Images posted to Instagram showed him connected to an oxygen mask and displaying surgical scars. A video accompanying the photos thanked the hospital staff for their care. He also posted images of support from family and friends, including his mother, Teresita Lavandeira, and well-wishing balloons.
The blogger indicated a renewed focus on prioritizing sleep and spending more time with family following his health scare. A YouTube video titled “My Stupidity Got Me In The Hospital For 21 Days! What we have is The Most Important Video I’ve Ever Shared” is scheduled to go live at noon EST on Monday, promising a comprehensive account of his ordeal. Hilton concluded his recent video expressing gratitude to God, his family, and his supporters.
