Pentagon Orders 3,000 82nd Airborne to Middle East | WSJ
The Pentagon is preparing to deploy approximately 3,000 soldiers from the Army’s 82nd Airborne Division to the Middle East, according to multiple sources familiar with the plan. The deployment, which includes a brigade combat team, is intended to support ongoing military operations related to the conflict with Iran, a situation now entering its fourth week.
A command element and ground forces are expected to be included in the deployment, with the total number of troops anticipated to be fewer than 1,500, according to one U.S. Official. The 82nd Airborne is considered the Army’s premier rapid-response force, capable of deploying a battalion within 18 hours and a full brigade within 72 hours.
This move follows the recent dispatch of roughly 2,200 Marines aboard three warships, including the USS Boxer, which departed California last week. These Marines are also headed to the Middle East to bolster forces near Iran and secure the Strait of Hormuz, a strategically vital waterway.
The U.S. Has been conducting an air campaign against Iran for several weeks, with over 9,000 combat flights targeting more than 9,000 military targets. These targets include Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) headquarters, intelligence sites, ballistic missile facilities, missile defense systems, military manufacturing plants, and Iranian naval vessels, as reported by U.S. Central Command.
Even as the deployment of ground troops represents a potential escalation of the conflict, President Donald Trump indicated Tuesday that direct negotiations with Iran are currently underway. Participants in these talks include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Vice President Vance, special envoy Steve Witkoff, his son-in-law Jared Kushner, and other unnamed individuals. Iran has publicly dismissed reports of negotiations as “fake news,” suggesting they are intended to stabilize oil markets.
The Pentagon has deferred specific questions regarding the troop deployment to the White House. A White House spokesperson stated that announcements concerning troop movements would originate from the Department of Defense. So far, 13 U.S. Troops have been killed and at least 290 wounded in action during the conflict with Iran, according to reports.
President Trump stated Tuesday that the U.S. Has “won” the war, claiming Iran’s military has been “nearly annihilated,” despite continued attacks against U.S. Troops in neighboring countries. The situation remains fluid, with the potential for further escalation dependent on the outcome of ongoing negotiations and the evolving security landscape in the region.
