Pennsylvania Woman Dies of Measles Complications Amid State Outbreak

September 14, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Unvaccinated Pennsylvania Woman Dies of Measles Complications Amid State Outbreak

A 40-year-old woman in Jefferson County, Pennsylvania, has died from complications associated with measles, according to county coroner Greg Furlong. Prior to these incidents, the commonwealth had not reported a single measles death in 35 years.

The Tech TL;DR:

  • Casualty Metrics: The 40-year-old Jefferson County fatality represents the third measles-linked death in Pennsylvania this year, accompanied by 124 hospitalizations out of more than 670 total cases statewide.
  • Clinical Context: Officials from the Pennsylvania Health Department have confirmed multiple fatalities associated with the virus, contrasting with separate local coroner findings in Lancaster County involving infant mortality investigations.

Coroner Findings and Statewide Outbreak Metrics

In a news release dated September 12, Jefferson County Coroner Greg Furlong stated that the death of the 40-year-old woman was a heartbreaking loss and an unfortunate reminder that measles can be a serious and potentially life-threatening disease.

Diverging Coroner Reports in Lancaster County Infant Investigation

The state’s fatality count has also involved complex forensic investigations at the county level. Following a Pennsylvania Health Department announcement regarding two state deaths associated with measles, Lancaster County Coroner Dr. Stephen Diamantoni publicly addressed an infant mortality case included in that tally. Speaking in an interview, Diamantoni stated that he found evidence of the measles virus in the infant’s lung tissue, but noted the baby died shortly after birth from an internal hemorrhage and a traumatic rupture of the spleen, adding that he did not find evidence of an enlarged spleen prior to the rupture.

Diamantoni noted he was investigating the death further, mentioning that the infant was born at a birthing center assisted by a lay midwife who was not certified in midwifery. Conversely, state Health Secretary Dr. Debra Bogen expressed full confidence in her department’s epidemiological conclusion. As a pediatrician with over 30 years of experience, Bogen stated she thoroughly reviewed the case investigation information and confirmed two recent measles-associated deaths in Lancaster County.

Governor Josh Shapiro nominated Bogen to her role in 2023. Meanwhile, the Department of Health confirmed that both individuals involved in the Lancaster County deaths were unvaccinated. Newborns remain ineligible for the measles, mumps, and rubella (MMR) vaccine, which recommends a first dose at 12 to 15 months and a second at 4 to 6 years.

Erosion of Herd Immunity and Diagnostic Tracking

In Lancaster County specifically, the percentage of children receiving the MMR vaccine dropped from 95.5% in 2017 to 87.6% last year. Maintaining herd immunity typically requires a vaccination coverage threshold of 95% within a given demographic.
