Pedro Nuno Santos Reacts to Politics and Policy on Social Media

Former Socialist Leader Criticizes Government on Gestational Mourning and EU Trade Deal

Lisbon, Portugal – Last weekend, former Socialist Party (PS) leader Pedro Nuno Santos took to social media to voice strong criticism of recent government actions. His posts targeted proposed changes to gestational mourning leave policies and the EU’s tariff agreement with the US.

On Saturday, Santos expressed outrage over government proposals that woudl alter existing gestational mourning leave regulations. He described the proposals as “Meschinth, insensitivity and ignorance!” and argued that they would “end with the possibility of the mother and father taking three days out of gestational mourning when it is not justified that the mother takes the license by interruption of pregnancy.” Santos further questioned the rationale behind referring to the father’s leave as “family assistance,” asking, “Doesn’t the father suffer from the interruption of a desired pregnancy? Are you not entitled to mourning?” He concluded his critique by stating, “In essential this revocation is just a reduction in rights. The right that does not fill their mouths to talk about family, because in reality they do not want to know about families or suffering because they go through when there is a gestational loss.” Thes posts garnered approximately five thousand likes across Instagram and Facebook, with around 600 comments.

The following day,Santos shifted his focus to the tariff agreement reached between the US and the EU,labeling it a “Colossal defeat” and “humiliation” for the EU. This contrasts with the assessment of Jose Luís Carneiro, who stated that while the agreement is not ideal, it is indeed still better than agreements secured by other nations, such as Japan. Carneiro emphasized the importance of “stabilizing expectations and ending uncertainty” and urged the government to conduct “an assessment as extensive as possible on the impact of these tariffs on our economy.”

In these two consecutive days, Pedro nuno Santos has publicly shared his opinions on current political matters. His own future political plans remain unstated, though he currently serves as a deputy and appears to intend to continue in that role. While he previously engaged in political commentary during the period between his ministerial tenure and leading the PS,no decisions have been made regarding his future activities.
