WESTFORD – A bench was dedicated at Jack Walsh Field this month to honor Dr. Athanasiou,the founding pediatrician of Pediatrics West,as he enters retirement after decades of service to the community. The dedication recognizes Dr. Athanasiou’s lasting impact on the health adn well-being of Westford families.
For years, dr. Athanasiou has been a trusted figure for countless children and parents in Westford, building a practice known for its caring approach and expertise. The bench serves as a tangible symbol of gratitude from the Pediatrics West staff and the wider community for his dedication. as he steps down, Dr. Athanasiou leaves behind a legacy of compassionate care and a well-trained team prepared to continue his commitment to pediatric health.
Dr. Athanasiou reflected on the evolving challenges in pediatrics, noting the increasing focus on mental health, growth and progress related to lifestyle choices – including nutrition and exercise – and discussions around health, development, and gender decisions. He emphasized the importance of early intervention, stating that indications of obesity can begin around age 7, prompting proactive conversations wiht parents.
Throughout his career, Dr. Athanasiou expressed a deep connection with his patients and their families. He shared his joy in encountering former patients in Westford, learning about their lives and accomplishments. “I love little kids,” he said.”They’re little puzzles.Every one of them is a little puzzle. And you have to solve it. It was my stated effort to make them trust me. It was very fulfilling.”
