PayPal & Google Wallet: Contactless Payments Disrupted for German Users

March 24, 2026 Dr. Michael Lee – Health Editor Health

German consumers face increasing complexity in mobile payments as PayPal prepares to end support for linking accounts with Google Wallet, effective March 31, 2026. The move, confirmed by PayPal through FAQ pages and reported by German tech news sites heise online and BR24, will initially prevent novel connections between the two services.

The change particularly impacts users of Sparkasse and Volksbank, whose banking apps often lack full integration with Google Wallet, especially for contactless payments via Wear OS smartwatches and Girocard. Many have relied on linking their bank accounts to PayPal and then connecting PayPal to Google Wallet as a workaround. Once the connection is severed – through device changes, resets, or manual disconnection – it will be irreversible, according to PayPal.

While existing integrations will continue to function for now, the end of new connections forces users to explore alternative payment methods. Google Wallet in Germany currently supports Visa, Mastercard, and American Express cards directly, but not the widely used Girocard. PayPal is promoting its own NFC functionality within its app, launched in May 2025, which utilizes a virtual Mastercard. However, this solution is limited to smartphones and does not extend to smartwatch compatibility.

A potential workaround, confirmed by Google to deskmodder.de, involves activating PayPal’s in-app NFC function to generate a virtual Mastercard, then adding that card directly to Google Wallet. This method may allow continued use of PayPal through Google Wallet, even on smartwatches.

The decision by PayPal reflects a broader strategic shift, aiming to prioritize its own payment ecosystem and reduce reliance on third-party wallets. This move coincides with the emergence of Wero, a new European payment system backed by Sparkassen and Volksbanken, further complicating the landscape of mobile payments in Germany. The change is not limited to Germany, as PayPal implemented similar restrictions in the United States in June 2025.

For Sparkasse customers, the situation is particularly acute, as their banking apps offer limited NFC functionality, especially for smartwatch users. The bank’s “Mobiles Bezahlen” app only supports smartphones, while VR-BankingApp for Volksbanken and Raiffeisenbanken offers full NFC functionality on Android. The fragmentation of payment options is expected to increase complexity for consumers, requiring the management of multiple apps and potentially hindering the widespread adoption of mobile payments.
