Paulien Cornelisse Dies at 50 After Cancer Battle

Dutch writer and comedian Paulien Cornelisse died on Wednesday, September 30, at the age of 50 following a battle with cancer, vandaagenmorgen.nl reported. Known for her dryly humorous and analytical language observations, Cornelisse broke through in 2008 with columns in NRC and Next and her collection Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding.

Cornelisse Writes Novels and Appears on Television

Following her literary debut, Cornelisse built a career spanning novels, columns, and television. She wrote columns for NRC and later for Volkskrant, alongside publishing the novel De verwarde cavia and collections such as Japan in honderd stukjes and Taal voor de leuk. Her television credits included the VPRO series Tokidoki, named after her favorite Japanese word meaning “sometimes.” Beginning in 2025, she served as a jury member on the television program De Slimste Mens, appearing on the show recently. In November 2025, her book De verwarde cavia – Terug op kantoor won the NS Publieksprijs 2025.

Much of her work examined the quirks of everyday speech.

Psychology and Japanese Studies Inform Cornelisse Writing

Cornelisse studied psychology and Japanese in Hiroshima. Her experiences in Japan informed her writing, including the observation in Japan in honderd stukjes that Japan is ontstellend anders en verbazingwekkend gewoon. She frequently connected psychological concepts to language and daily life, writing in her book Taal is zeg maar echt mijn ding that Praten is net als fietsen: als je erover na gaat denken, val je om.

That sentiment echoed the centipede dilemma from psychology, noting that if a centipede must think about which leg to move first, it no longer takes a step. vandaagenmorgen.nl noted that Cornelisse thought about her work deeply while continuing her creative output.

Her recent projects included the March 2025 Boekenweekessay, titled Hèhè – Over wat we zeggen zonder dat we het doorhebben, and an appearance on a podcast with Theo Maassen discussing the art of treating one’s talent like a household pet.
