Paul Piendl and Freya Olbrich Discuss Sailing in yacht.de Podcast

An On-Water Partnership Built on Contrasting Strengths

European offshore sailing champions Paul Piendl and Freya Olbrich detailed their partnership, careers, and the financial hurdles facing German sailors in a podcast episode released by yacht.de. Though not a romantic couple, the pair display strong on-board chemistry, dividing roles equally based on individual strengths in regatta sailing, crisis management, and long-distance navigation.

On board, Olbrich excels at the tiller thanks to her extensive regatta experience, while Piendl relies on his stoic calm and long-distance background during crisis situations. In their interview with yacht.de, the duo detailed how they tackle new challenges and learn from one another, bringing together contrasting skill sets honed through distinct, rigorous backgrounds in competitive sailing.

Forged in Solo Circumnavigations and Regattas

Piendl spent four years sailing round the world in his early 20s, navigating solo and with crews while surviving a broken mast in the Red Sea. Olbrich is a qualified sailmaker and geography student who gathered solo sailing experience at the Silverrudder and participates in the Magenta Project to promote women in sailing. The pair recounted how they met and transitioned into competing successfully as a duo in offshore regattas.

Bridging the German Funding Gap via International Support

While countries like France and the UK maintain extensive professional structures for offshore athletes, ambitious German sailors face steep personal financial risks. To offset these economic barriers, Piendl and Olbrich utilized the Royal Ocean Racing Club’s (RORC) Griffin Youth Project. This international support programme provides boats and removes financial hurdles, enabling young talents to compete directly against seasoned professionals.

Temporary Separation Following European Championship Success

Following their major European Championship win, the pair are set to go their separate ways temporarily. Olbrich will focus on completing her bachelor’s degree next summer, while Piendl devotes time to his own independent projects. Nevertheless, both sailors agree that their recent championship run will not be their final race together as a duo.
