Paul Maurice: 2000 NHL Games & Historic Coaching Milestone
SUNRISE, Florida – Florida Panthers Head Coach Paul Maurice will reach a milestone tonight, becoming only the second coach in National Hockey League history to reach 2,000 regular season games coached. The Panthers will host the Seattle Kraken at Amerant Bank Arena, marking the occasion for Maurice, who joins Hockey Hall of Famer Scotty Bowman in achieving this feat.
The 59-year-old Maurice, originally from Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, enters Tuesday’s game with 950 career wins – the third-highest total in NHL history and second among active coaches. He is in his 28th season as an NHL head coach, trailing only Bowman’s 30 seasons. Maurice is one of only three coaches to have recorded at least 175 wins with three different franchises, alongside Bowman and Darryl Sutter.
Maurice first took the helm as a head coach on November 7, 1995, when his Hartford Whalers defeated the San Jose Sharks 7-3. He was 28 years and 281 days old at the time, the youngest coach to assume the position since Gary Green on November 15, 1979. He is the fifth-youngest coach to debut in the NHL and the youngest to reach 500, 1000 and 1500 games coached.
Since joining the Panthers prior to the 2022-23 season, Maurice has a regular season record of 175-119-21. Under his leadership, the Panthers have averaged the second-most shots on goal per game in the league (32.8) and have allowed the seventh-fewest goals against (28.1). Florida also leads the league in hits with 8,266 during Maurice’s tenure.
The Panthers have posted a league-best 45-23 record in Stanley Cup Playoff games under Maurice. Having secured Stanley Cup victories in the past two seasons, Maurice is only the fifth head coach in NHL history to win at least two Stanley Cups within his first three seasons with a team.
Maurice is expected to reach Bowman’s record of 2,141 games during the 2027-28 season, continuing a career marked by longevity and success in the NHL.
