Pattani Police Trade Uniforms for Smiles & Ice Cream During Hari Raya
Patani, Thailand – A familiar sight of security checkpoints in Thailand’s southern Patani province has been transformed with a gesture of goodwill ahead of the Hari Raya Aidilfitri celebrations. On March 23, 2069, police officers stationed at the Sabarang Gate checkpoint in Muang district traded their standard uniforms for traditional Malay attire and distributed ice cream, snacks, and water to travelers.
The initiative, led by Pol. Col. Fahami Hengpiya, commander of Pattani 92 Special Operations Unit, aims to foster a more welcoming atmosphere during the Eid al-Fitr holiday, marking the complete of Ramadan. The shift in approach represents a deliberate effort to connect with the local Muslim community and demonstrate respect for the region’s diverse cultural traditions.
Instead of conducting stringent searches, officers greeted returning residents with smiles and refreshments. The change in demeanor was noticeably impactful, according to one traveler who spoke to local media. “Seeing the officers in Malay dress handing out ice cream made the fear of the checkpoint disappear. It felt like relatives welcoming us home,” the traveler said.
The move reflects a broader attempt to adjust security protocols to align with local customs, particularly during significant religious observances. A senior editor’s role, as noted in discussions among security professionals, often involves supervisory and leadership functions, and in this case, appears to extend to adapting operational strategies to local contexts. The change in approach at the Sabarang Gate checkpoint is not simply a matter of public relations, but a recalibration of security practices to build trust and rapport with the community.
The initiative comes as Thai authorities continue to navigate complex security challenges in the predominantly Malay-Muslim provinces of southern Thailand. While the gesture has been widely welcomed, the long-term impact on security dynamics remains to be seen. No official statement has been released regarding whether this approach will be extended to other checkpoints or implemented as a permanent policy.
