Park Chanyang: Acclaimed Musical Actress & Pi’s Sister Rani

A standing ovation erupted at the GS Art Center in Seoul on February 7th, directed toward actor Park Chan-yang, an unexpected addition to the cast of the Korean premiere of “Life of Pi.” Park, initially cast as an alternate for the role of Pi’s sister, Rani, and as a cover for the characters of Pi and Kumar, received sustained applause during a performance that highlighted the production’s willingness to experiment with casting.

The musical, based on the Man Booker Prize-winning novel by Yann Martel, opened in December 2025 and has already garnered attention for its innovative stagecraft. The production currently features Park Jung-min and Park Kang-hyun alternating in the titular role of Pi. However, the production company, S&CO, opted to showcase Park Chan-yang in a dedicated performance, a move initially prompted by the need to cover for a lead actor’s absence, according to reports.

Park Chan-yang’s performance as Rani, and her potential to portray Pi, has generated significant buzz, particularly within the Korean theatre community. A recent blog post detailed the immersive stage design, comparing it to a realistic depiction of the ocean, and expressed anticipation for Park’s interpretation of the lead role. The production’s creative team includes Seo Hyun-cheol and Hwang Man-ik as Pi’s father, and Joo-a and Song In-sung sharing the roles of Pi’s mother, a nurse, and orange juice vendor.

The cast also features a diverse ensemble including Kim Ji-hye and Lee Seung-heon as Lulu Chen, Kim Hyung-jun and Shin Jin-kyung as the Cook/Richard Parker (voice), and Han Gyu-jeong as Kumar/Zaid Khan. Actors such as Kwon Sang-seok and Park Jae-chun are serving as covers for key roles, even as a team of puppeteers, including Kim Si-young and Kang Eun-na, contribute to the show’s acclaimed visual effects.

The decision to feature Park Chan-yang in a prominent role reflects a broader trend within the production, prioritizing the strength of the “work” itself over reliance on established “stars,” as noted by the Dailian newspaper. The production’s success is currently anchored by Park Jung-min and Park Kang-hyun, but the inclusion of alternate performers like Park Chan-yang demonstrates a commitment to exploring different interpretations of the characters and maintaining the show’s momentum.
