Paris-Roubaix Winners: A Complete Palmarès & History

March 24, 2026 Alex Carter - Sports Editor Sport

A Century of Suffering: Examining the Palmarès of Paris-Roubaix

The 128th edition of Paris-Roubaix, scheduled for April 12, 2026, will add another name to a roll of honor steeped in cycling lore. The race, nicknamed “The Hell of the North” for its brutal cobbled sectors, has consistently tested the limits of endurance and bike handling since its inception in 1896. Examining the palmarès reveals a history of dominance, fierce rivalries, and the evolving demands of one of cycling’s most iconic events.

The earliest editions of Paris-Roubaix were dominated by French riders. Louis Trousselier won the inaugural race, and the first decade saw French cyclists claim victory almost exclusively. This early French dominance reflected the sport’s origins and the logistical advantages of racing on home roads. However, the race soon began to attract international competition.

The interwar period saw a shift in the race’s character and a broadening of its winners’ circle. Italian riders began to challenge French supremacy, with riders like Alfredo Binda securing victories. The race’s difficulty became legendary, and the cobbled sections, often in appalling condition, became synonymous with the event.

Post-World War II, the race continued to evolve, with riders like Fausto Coppi and Rik Van Looy adding their names to the prestigious list. The 1960s and 70s witnessed the rise of Eddy Merckx, who won Paris-Roubaix twice, cementing his status as one of the greatest cyclists of all time. These victories came during a period of increasing professionalization in cycling, with teams and sponsors playing a larger role.

The late 20th and early 21st centuries were marked by intense rivalries. The clashes between Franco Ballerini and Hendrik Redant in the 1990s captivated fans, and the subsequent era saw the emergence of Tom Boonen and Fabian Cancellara as dominant forces. Their rivalry, spanning much of the 2000s, became a defining feature of the race, with both riders achieving multiple victories. Cancellara won in 2006, 2010, and 2013, while Boonen triumphed in 2005, 2008, and 2009. The competition between these two riders pushed the boundaries of what was possible on the cobbles, and their tactical battles became legendary.

Recent editions have seen a continued influx of international talent. Riders from Great Britain, Belgium, and other nations have challenged for victory, demonstrating the globalization of the sport. The race has also seen innovations in equipment, with wider wheelsets, like those pioneered by Zipp, becoming increasingly prevalent as riders seek to improve aerodynamics and comfort on the punishing cobbles.

The 2024 edition was won by Mathieu van der Poel, adding his name to the list of champions. The 2025 race saw a surprise victory by a relatively unknown rider, further demonstrating the unpredictable nature of Paris-Roubaix.

As the 2026 edition approaches, the question remains: who will conquer the Hell of the North and etch their name into the history of this grueling and iconic race? The race organizers have announced no changes to the route, maintaining the 29 sectors of cobblestones that define the challenge.
