Papyless Reports Profit Turnaround Driven by Ad Efficiency – Q3 2026 Results
Tokyo – Japanese ebook platform operator Papyless (stock code: 3641) announced its fiscal year 2026 third quarter (April to December 2025) consolidated financial results on February 10, reporting a reversal of year-on-year losses despite an 8.3% decrease in revenue attributed to market fluctuations. The company cited significant improvements in advertising efficiency as the key driver for the positive shift in profitability.
Papyless reported cumulative revenue of 11.053 billion yen for the nine-month period, down from 12.053 billion yen in the same period the previous year. However, operating profit reached 79 million yen, a substantial turnaround from the 284 million yen loss recorded in the prior year’s third quarter. Recurring profit totaled 330 million yen, reversing a 110 million yen loss, and net profit came in at 125 million yen, compared to a 185 million yen loss in the previous year.
The company’s ebook business remains its core operation, generating 11.057 billion yen in revenue, an 8.3% year-over-year decline. Despite the revenue decrease, the ebook division achieved a profit of 516 million yen, a significant improvement from the 4 million yen loss reported in the same period last year. Papyless attributed this profit increase to precise control and improved efficiency in advertising costs. According to the Council of Science Editors, editors have a responsibility to establish clear guidelines for acceptable practices, and it appears Papyless has successfully implemented such guidelines in its advertising strategies.
The IP production business, however, continues to operate at a loss. Revenue remains at zero, with the division reporting a loss of 186 million yen, an increase from the 105 million yen loss recorded in the same period last year. This indicates the business unit remains in an investment phase and has not yet reached profitability.
Papyless has maintained its full-year forecast for the fiscal year ending March 2026. The company projects full-year revenue of 15.365 billion yen, a 2.6% decrease from the previous year. Operating profit is forecast at 435 million yen, recurring profit at 492 million yen, and net profit at 219 million yen. The company intends to continue optimizing its advertising strategies and stabilizing profits in its core businesses to achieve its annual financial targets. AAF career overviews highlight the role of a Senior Editor as a guardian of editorial integrity, and Papyless appears to be applying similar principles to its financial strategies.
