Panasonic Lumix DMW-DMS1: New Digital Shotgun Mic for Filmmakers

February 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

Panasonic unveiled the LUMIX DMW-DMS1, a new digital shotgun microphone designed to connect directly to compatible LUMIX cameras via the hot shoe, on February 24, 2026. The microphone aims to provide streamlined audio capture for a variety of shooting scenarios, eliminating the need for separate cables for power and audio transmission.

The DMW-DMS1 features a newly developed 10mm diameter microphone capsule array intended to deliver focused and detailed sound, even in challenging environments. Panasonic highlighted the microphone’s internal floating shock-mount system, designed to minimize vibration noise during handheld or mobile shooting. A windscreen is included to reduce wind interference when recording outdoors. The device also incorporates a wind noise cancellation system utilizing float-recording technology, which the company states preserves natural vocal character while suppressing unwanted environmental noise.

The microphone offers six selectable directional modes: Forward Directionality (Cardioid), Stereo, Wide Stereo, Forward Directionality (Supercardioid), Rearward Directionality (Supercardioid), and Bidirectional (Supercardioid). These modes allow users to adapt to different recording situations, such as interviews, vlogging, and event coverage, without requiring additional microphones.

A key feature of the DMW-DMS1 is its support for 32-bit float recording on compatible cameras. Panasonic states this format allows for audio capture without distortion at sound pressure levels up to approximately 120 dB. The microphone also includes two backup recording modes, which, when used in 4-channel recording mode, designate channels 3 and 4 as backup tracks for critical audio capture.

The DMW-DMS1 weighs approximately 100 grams and measures 73.7x45x63.7 mm. It is powered and transmits audio digitally through the camera’s hot shoe. Physical switches on the microphone body provide direct control of key functions, including adjustable brightness for visibility in low-light conditions. A dedicated pouch is included for storage.

As of February 2026, the DMW-DMS1 is compatible with the LUMIX S1II, S1RII, S1IIE, S5II, and S5IIX camera models. Compatibility with the GH7 and G9II is planned for a future update, requiring a firmware update for full functionality, including 32-bit float recording. The price and availability of the DMW-DMS1 have not yet been announced.
