Pahang & Terengganu Leaders Strengthen Bilateral Ties, Unveil New Cooperation Frontiers
Senior Minister Lee Hsien Loong stated on Thursday that his visit to the Malaysian states of Pahang and Terengganu was intended to strengthen ties and identify new avenues for cooperation between the two sides.
Speaking during a media wrap-up in Terengganu, Lee emphasized the necessity of maintaining relationships at both the national and state levels. While noting that strong relations exist between the two prime ministers and their respective ministries, he argued that these high-level connections must be supported by active engagement with individual states.
The Senior Minister highlighted a disparity in the current level of interaction between Singapore and various Malaysian regions. He noted that while there is significant “toing and froing” with states such as Johor, similar levels of engagement have not been as prevalent with Pahang, Terengganu, and other states located on the east coast.
Economic and Tourism Objectives
Lee described Pahang and Terengganu as important, large states that Singapore must understand and maintain contact with to foster better mutual understanding. He identified several key areas where the two sides could potentially develop new partnerships, specifically citing economic opportunities and tourism.

The visit serves as an effort to expand Singapore’s reach beyond its traditional points of contact within Malaysia, seeking to establish a broader framework of cooperation that includes exchanges and collaborations with these east coast states.
The push for state-level cooperation is framed as a complementary strategy to existing national diplomatic efforts, aimed at ensuring that bilateral relations are comprehensive and inclusive of regional interests.
