Pablo Hernández de Cos Faces Klaas Knot in the Race for the ECB Presidency

November 7, 2026 Priya Shah – Business Editor Business

Pablo Hernández de Cos has emerged as a primary contender to succeed Christine Lagarde as president of the European Central Bank (ECB), a position that would mark the first time a Spanish official has held the institution’s top leadership role. With his official candidacy confirmed, he currently faces only one confirmed rival for the post beginning in February: Dutch central banker Klaas Knot.

The selection process for the presidency, one of the most significant roles within the European Union, remains a focal point for analysts evaluating the real probabilities of a Spanish appointment.

Knot vs. De Cos: Race for ECB Chief Begins

Hernández De Cos Secures Support for Technical Expertise

Hernández de Cos currently holds a strong position, supported by a reputation for technical expertise and an ability to foster consensus among member states. His standing was highlighted as early as January, when Christian Kopf, head of fixed income at Union Investment, described him as the candidate with the greatest technical knowledge of monetary policy and central banking. Kopf noted that such an appointment would signal that Europe will not falter and that the euro will remain a strong currency.

This technical assessment is reflected in broader industry sentiment. An OMFIF panel survey from April identified De Cos as the top-rated candidate for his expertise in monetary economics. A late October survey of economists conducted by Bloomberg maintains the Spaniard as the favorite, placing him ahead of his Dutch rival.

Geopolitical Factors Shape the European Leadership Race

Beyond individual credentials, the race is influenced by the complex distribution of leadership roles across European institutions. Proponents of the Spanish bid point to the fact that a Spaniard has never held the ECB presidency. Spain’s recent economic performance—characterized by relatively strong growth and fiscal discipline compared to peers like France or Italy—serves as a supporting argument for his candidacy.

Conversely, the Dutch bid faces structural hurdles. The Netherlands has previously held the ECB presidency through Wim Duisenberg. The ECB’s Executive Committee currently includes a Dutch national, Frank Elderson. Since the committee has never featured two members of the same nationality, a Knot presidency would represent an unprecedented anomaly unless Elderson were to vacate his position to facilitate the move. Meanwhile, although Joachim Nagel of Germany has been mentioned in recent discussions, any German candidacy would face the challenge of Germany already holding the presidency of the European Commission through 2029.

The Evolution of European Leadership Selections

The current search for leadership takes place against a backdrop of ongoing institutional gaps. The ECB’s Executive Committee currently lacks any female representation, a situation mirrored by the lack of women among the 28 members of the Governing Council. Historical efforts to balance these roles have previously seen complex negotiations; for instance, when Germany and France were deadlocked over high-level appointments, Emmanuel Macron proposed the candidacies of Christine Lagarde and Ursula von der Leyen to resolve disputes over the European Commission presidency and the role of High Representative of the Union for Foreign Affairs. French government officials have previously weighed internal candidates for high-profile financial roles, including deputy governor of the Bank of France Agnès Bénassy-Quéré and former OECD official Laurence Boone, as reported in September.
