Paapa Essiedu Addresses Racist Backlash to ‘Harry Potter’ Snape Casting
LONDON – Paapa Essiedu, cast as Severus Snape in HBO’s forthcoming “Harry Potter” television series, has revealed he has received death threats since his casting was announced. The actor detailed the abuse in a recent interview with The Times of London, describing messages telling him to “quit or I’ll murder you.”
Essiedu’s casting, first reported a year ago, sparked immediate backlash online, with some fans expressing displeasure at the deviation from the character’s physical description in J.K. Rowling’s novels. Snape is consistently portrayed as having an unappealing appearance – “greasy black hair, cold black eyes, sallow skin, a large, hooked nose” – a stark contrast to Essiedu, who has been described as conventionally attractive. The casting decision has been widely interpreted as a deliberate attempt to modernize the character, a move that ignited a wave of criticism from a segment of the fanbase.
“The reality is that if I look at Instagram I will notice somebody saying, ‘I’m going to come to your house and kill you,’” Essiedu told The Times. “So while I’m pretty sure I’m not going to be murdered—that could age badly! But, yes, while I hope I’ll be OK, nobody should have to encounter this for doing their job.” This sentiment echoes concerns raised by actors and public figures facing online harassment, particularly those from marginalized groups. TheWrap first reported on Essiedu’s comments.
Essiedu acknowledged the emotional toll of the abuse, stating, “Many people put their lives on the line in their work. I’m playing a wizard in ‘Harry Potter.’” However, he too revealed he is channeling the negativity into his performance. “The abuse fuels me and makes me more passionate about making this character my own, because I think of how I felt as a kid,” he said. “I would imagine myself at Hogwarts on broomsticks, and the idea that a kid like me can see themselves represented in that world? That’s motivation to not be intimidated by someone saying they’d rather I died instead of doing work I’m going to be really proud of.”
The controversy surrounding Essiedu’s casting also touches on broader discussions about representation and the interpretation of beloved literary characters. Some critics have pointed to Snape’s complex and often reprehensible behavior in the books – described by some as akin to a “Wizard KKK member” – as justification for a reimagining of the character’s appearance. HuffPost highlighted the racist undertones of much of the criticism directed at Essiedu.
HBO has not yet commented on the threats against Essiedu. The series, which is expected to span ten years and detail the seven books, is currently in production. The premiere date remains undisclosed, leaving unanswered questions about how the production will address the ongoing controversy and ensure the safety of its cast, and crew.
