Overwatch Season 5 adds hero Doctrine and reworks, CNET reported

Overwatch Season 5 Introduces Doctrine, Sombra Rework, and Grímsvötn Map

Overwatch Season 5 launches on October 6, bringing a new support hero named Doctrine, major reworks for Sombra and Roadhog, and a new escort map set in Grímsvötn, Iceland, CNET reported.

The Tech TL;DR:

• Doctrine joins the support roster as a vampiric villain featuring accuracy-based mechanics, an alternate fire power boost, and a bat-drone ultimate ability that reduces enemy health pools.
• Roadhog loses his iconic instant-kill hook combo and gains a new Trash Compactor ability that absorbs incoming damage and turns it into a burst counter-attack.

The addition of Doctrine expands the game’s support roster with a kit centered around life manipulation. According to the official Blizzard blog, Doctrine escaped from an Icelandic prison designed for exceptionally dangerous criminals, setting the stage for the season’s narrative.

Alongside the new hero, Sombra shifts from the damage category to the support role.

Roadhog undergoes a parallel restructuring in the tank role. Hero designer Scott Kennedy told CNET that the hero’s chain hook pull distance and gun mechanics are adjusted to remove instant-kill combos. Roadhog receives a Trash Compactor ability designed to nullify incoming projectile damage and redirect it as a defensive burst.

Season 5 Adds Volcanic Map and Unvaulted Passes

Season 5 introduces a new escort map set in the volcanic terrain of Grímsvötn, where attackers push payloads beneath a lava waterfall, per CNET’s reporting. Polygon noted that the battle pass features Halloween-themed legendary skins such as Ghostly Belle Ashe, Jack O’ Ripper Soldier: 76, and Ghost Bride Mei. The battle pass also debuts the Unvaulted Passes system, allowing players to resume progress on historical tracks from seasons 1 through 15.

Cosmetic highlights include Lúcio’s Treblemaker mythic weapon skin, which houses a tiny breakdancing frog wearing headphones inside the gun barrel, according to CNET. Blizzard also announced a Solo Leveling "Shadow Monarch" collaboration event running from October 6 to October 26, bringing crossover skins for Genji, Reaper, Anran, Reinhardt, and Lifeweaver, as detailed by Final Weapon.

Solo Leveling Collaboration Brings Skins to Several Heroes

Battle pass owners can additionally unlock Legendary skins such as Bat Empress Junker Queen and Autumn Fox Zenyatta, alongside Epic skins including Skelly Bastion, Witching Hour Brigitte, and Spectral Shroud Symmetra. The battle pass’s Ultimate version includes Crimson Regent Doctrine and Ghost Voyager Venture Legendary skins. Meanwhile, the shop will feature Tech Witches skins and further Legendary options for Mizuki, Domina, Cassidy, Ashe alongside BOB, Moira, and Ana.
