Freeborn and Mower Counties Unite for Annual Relay for Life to Combat Cancer
Freeborn County Fairgrounds to Host Event on August 8th
Teh Freeborn County Fairgrounds will be the site of the annual Relay for Life of Freeborn and Mower Counties on August 8th, an event dedicated to supporting the fight against cancer. This signature American Cancer Society initiative aims to bring the community together to honor those affected by the disease, remember those lost, and raise crucial funds for cancer research.
The evening’s program is designed to be both moving and engaging for all attendees. A highlight of the event will be a speech from a cancer survivor, Todd Utpadel, during the opening ceremony, followed by a survivor walk. In remembrance of individuals who have battled or succumbed to cancer, luminaria bags will be displayed, symbolizing the widespread impact of the disease.
Families can anticipate a variety of activities throughout the evening, including a kiddie train, hay wagon rides, games, a bounce house, and a sponge toss featuring local community leaders. Food will be available for purchase, and attendees can enjoy live music and participate in a silent auction.
This year marks the 40th anniversary of Relay for Life, and participating teams are encouraged to walk 40 laps, totaling 10 miles, with special recognition for those who achieve this milestone.
The relay for Life serves as a powerful reminder of the hope that emerges when a community unites to confront cancer. The event begins at 5 p.m., with the opening ceremony scheduled for 6 p.m.
