Oregon Ducks cornerback Jahlil Florence has entered the transfer portal mid-season, according to reports surfacing Wednesday. The move comes as a surprise given Florence’s previous commitment to completing his final year of eligibility with the Ducks.
Florence initially opted to return to Oregon for the 2024 season rather then pursue the NFL Draft, aiming to further develop his potential after a promising 2023 campaign. However, a important knee injury requiring two surgeries sidelined him, and limited playing time this season has seemingly prompted a change of plans. His departure will not immediately impact Oregon’s defensive depth chart as he has not played a role on the team this year.
The decision to transfer represents a shift for Florence, who stated in August he was “definitely” returning for another year to “finish” what he started. He explained at the time that a “severe” knee injury necessitated extensive rehabilitation. “it was a major knee injury. I had to get a severe surgery so it sidelined me for a little bit.Even I’m not really sure the exact injury. I had to get two surgeries so, it was kinda severe,” florence said to OregonLive.
Florence’s lack of on-field opportunities this season likely hindered his ability to showcase his skills to NFL scouts, possibly influencing his decision to explore other options. He will now seek a program where he can regain playing time and re-establish his draft stock.
