A freeze warning went into effect at 5:21 a.m. This morning for the South Central Oregon Coast and Curry County Coast, lasting until 9 a.m. The National Weather Service (NWS) anticipates sub-freezing temperatures as low as 25 degrees Fahrenheit, with readings between 28 and 32 degrees along the immediate coastline.
The NWS warns that frost and freeze conditions pose a threat to crops and other sensitive vegetation, and could potentially damage unprotected outdoor plumbing. Residents are urged to take immediate steps to protect vulnerable plants from the cold.
According to the NWS, freeze warnings are typically issued between May and October, though they can be extended if conditions warrant. These warnings are triggered when low temperatures are forecast to fall between 29 and 32 degrees Fahrenheit. A freeze watch may be issued several days in advance if there is a potential for temperatures to reach these thresholds.
The current warning encompasses areas from Florence down through Reedsport, North Bend, Coos Bay, Bandon, Gold Beach, and Brookings. The NWS states that little can be done to protect plants once a freeze warning or watch is issued, advising residents to move sensitive plants indoors if possible, as the freeze is likely to cause damage or death depending on the severity of the conditions.
A separate high wind warning remains in effect for the South Central Oregon Coast and Curry County Coast until 10 a.m. Sunday, with south winds of 30 to 40 mph and gusts up to 65 mph expected. The NWS cautions that these high winds could move loose debris, damage property, and cause power outages, particularly impacting travel for high-profile vehicles. Residents are advised to secure any loose objects that could be blown around or damaged.
The NWS similarly issued a High Surf Advisory for the Curry County Coast until 10:00 AM PST today, February 22nd. Current conditions at Brookings (BRKO) show a temperature of 58°F (14°C) with south winds at 18 mph. Rain is expected to continue tonight and throughout the weekend, with highs around 50 degrees Fahrenheit.
