Opera Singer Janusz Ratajczak Dies in Car Crash on DK10, Poland
A fatal traffic collision on Monday, March 23, 2026, on the DK10 national road in Przyłubie, near Bydgoszcz, Poland, claimed the life of renowned opera singer Janusz Ratajczak. The accident, involving a truck and three passenger vehicles, occurred around 4:00 PM local time, according to reports from the Solec Kujawski Volunteer Fire Department.
Ratajczak, 64, was a celebrated tenor and longtime soloist with the Opera Nova in Bydgoszcz. TVP3 Bydgoszcz reported that he and his wife had celebrated 30 years of artistic work together in 2018.
A graduate of the Academy of Music in Bydgoszcz, Ratajczak collaborated with numerous Polish theaters and performed extensively both domestically, and internationally. His repertoire included over 60 stage roles, encompassing characters from operas such as “The Haunted Manor,” “Halka,” “Carmen,” and “The Tales of Hoffmann.”
Beyond his performance career, Ratajczak dedicated over three decades to music education, mentoring generations of young vocalists. Since 2009, he taught classical singing at the Academy of Music in Łódź. In 2016, he was awarded the Bronze Medal for Merit to Culture, Gloria Artis, in recognition of his artistic achievements.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the accident, under the supervision of the prosecutor’s office. The DK10 remains completely blocked in the area of the collision, as confirmed by reports from TVP3 Bydgoszcz and Pomorska.pl.
