Opera Naples will present Derrick WangS acclaimed opera,”Scalia/Ginsburg,” on february 20 as part of America250,the nationwide commemoration of the nation’s 250th anniversary. The performance offers a unique glimpse into the intellectual rapport between the late Supreme Court Justices Antonin Scalia and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, despite their often opposing legal philosophies.
The opera, originally requiring a full orchestral accompaniment, will be staged with piano only-a special exception granted by the composer-creating a more intimate experience for audiences in the Opera Naples venue. Executive Director Melanie Kalnins emphasized the significance of this adaptation, noting it “works really nicely and makes it a little bit more intimate, especially in our space.”
“Scalia/Ginsburg” explores the justices’ differing views through a three-part structure, incorporating an allegorical figure who appears throughout the performance. The work draws upon the pair’s writings-dissenting opinions, majority opinions, and scholarly articles-to illuminate their shared commitment to the law and their respectful disagreement. The February 20 performance is a local contribution to America250, a multiyear initiative designed to honor the nation’s history and inspire civic engagement.Opera Naples’ production aims to spark dialog about the foundations of American jurisprudence and the importance of civil discourse.
