OpenAI to Combine ChatGPT, Codex & Browser into Single “Superapp”

March 20, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

OpenAI is consolidating its core artificial intelligence applications – including ChatGPT and the coding tool Codex – into a single desktop application, the company confirmed Thursday. The move, aimed at streamlining the user experience and improving performance, will see OpenAI President Greg Brockman temporarily lead the product overhaul and associated organizational changes.

According to an internal memo reported by the Wall Street Journal, OpenAI’s Chief of Applications, Fidji Simo, told employees the company had become “spreading our efforts across too many apps and stacks,” leading to fragmentation that “has been slowing us down and making it harder to hit the quality bar we seek.” Simo will oversee the sales team as the new application prepares for market release.

The decision to combine its tools comes after OpenAI released a standalone desktop version of Codex earlier this year, signaling a broader effort to expand its presence in the AI code-generation market. Greg Brockman, co-founder and president of OpenAI, previously served as CTO of Stripe before co-founding OpenAI, according to his official biography.

OpenAI’s strategy mirrors a broader trend within the artificial intelligence industry, as companies seek to integrate their offerings into more comprehensive platforms. Anthropic’s Claude, for example, has expanded its functionality by integrating third-party tools such as Slack, Canva, and Figma. Microsoft’s Copilot is similarly embedded across its suite of productivity and coding applications, including Word, Excel, GitHub, and Teams. Google is pursuing a comparable approach with Gemini, integrating AI capabilities across its Workspace suite and developer tools.

A growing number of newer AI tools are also experimenting with unified dashboards, bringing multiple AI models into a single workspace. This industry-wide shift suggests a move towards consolidation and a more seamless user experience, as companies compete to offer comprehensive AI solutions.
