OpenAI Funding: Reaches $852 Billion Valuation After Record $122B Round

April 1, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

OpenAI has secured $122 billion in new funding, bolstering its position as one of the world’s most valuable private companies and fueling its preparations for a potential public offering later this year. The funding round, finalized Tuesday, surpasses the previously announced expectation of $110 billion, according to CNBC.

The investment comes from a consortium of major companies including Amazon, Nvidia, and SoftBank, with SoftBank committing $110 billion, as reported by the Wall Street Journal. A select group of individual investors contributed approximately $3 billion to the round. This influx of capital values OpenAI at $852 billion, equivalent to roughly 9.35 trillion Norwegian kroner, according to reporting from Digi.no.

The substantial valuation places OpenAI at approximately 40 percent of the value of the Norwegian Government Pension Fund Global, commonly known as the Oil Fund, which stood at 19.974 trillion kroner as of April 1st. The company’s financial performance has also been strong, generating $13.1 billion in revenue last year and currently attracting 900 million weekly users, Digi.no reported.

OpenAI, founded in 2015, gained prominence with the launch of its chatbot, ChatGPT, in late 2022. The company is now valued at approximately one-quarter of the Norwegian Oil Fund. E24 reported that the latest funding round involved existing and former employees selling shares for a total of $6.6 billion, pricing the company at $500 billion. This represents a significant increase from a previous funding round earlier this year, when SoftBank invested and valued OpenAI at $300 billion.

The surge in valuation has propelled OpenAI past European giants like ASML in market capitalization, though it remains a private entity. Just a year ago, OpenAI’s valuation stood at $157 billion. Nvidia is also investing in OpenAI, with the two companies collaborating on the construction of data centers. OpenAI has now surpassed Elon Musk’s SpaceX as the world’s most valuable startup, with SpaceX currently valued at $400 billion.

The funding round arrives as OpenAI navigates a series of legal challenges and increasing competition within the artificial intelligence industry. The company is also preparing for a highly anticipated initial public offering (IPO) on the US stock market, though the timing and details remain undisclosed.
