OpenAI Foundation: $25B Plan for AI Safety & Disease Research

March 25, 2026 Rachel Kim – Technology Editor Technology

OpenAI’s nonprofit arm, the OpenAI Foundation, has pledged to invest at least $1 billion over the next year in a range of projects aimed at addressing the potential risks and maximizing the benefits of artificial intelligence, with a significant focus on curing diseases.

The commitment, announced Tuesday, represents a major expansion of the Foundation’s philanthropic activities and provides insight into how the company intends to fulfill its mission to develop AI for the benefit of “all of humanity,” according to a statement from OpenAI board chair Bret Taylor.

The $1 billion investment will support research in life sciences and health, as well as initiatives to mitigate the potential negative impacts of AI on employment, the economy, and mental health, particularly among young people. This follows a previous commitment in October to spend $25 billion on similar causes, though a specific timeline was not provided at that time.

The Foundation will prioritize “AI resilience,” focusing on ensuring AI systems continue to align with human intentions and avoid unintended consequences. According to Brian Jackson, principal research director at Info-Tech Research Group, this means addressing questions like, “Will AI continue to reach the goal that humans meant for it, or will it fail in some way?” and “Will there be safety considerations that lead us in a bad direction and we end up causing harm when we intend to help?”

Three key areas of concern for the Foundation are biosecurity, model safety, and the impact of AI on children and youth. The Foundation plans to improve detection and prevention of biological threats, both natural and AI-enabled, and will support independent testing and the development of industry standards. Regarding the impact on children, the Foundation will invest in research and safeguards to promote “beneficial interactions” with AI.

A central focus of the initial investment will be accelerating progress in life sciences and disease research. Taylor highlighted AI’s potential to speed up scientific and medical advancements, noting that researchers are already using AI to understand diseases, explore new treatments, and accelerate the translation of research into clinical practice.

Specific areas of focus include improving public data availability for health research, supporting AI-driven research into Alzheimer’s disease, and accelerating the development of therapies for high-mortality and high-burden diseases. The Foundation will work with partners to create and share open, high-quality datasets, and will collaborate with research institutions to map disease pathways, identify biomarkers, and speed up personalized treatment approaches. The initiative may also explore repurposing existing FDA-approved drugs for new applications.

Jackson noted the significance of OpenAI’s specific program areas, stating that these are “highly-complex and specialized” fields with vast amounts of data but limited capacity for analysis and insight generation. He suggested that this approach could serve as a model for other organizations seeking to prioritize AI projects, emphasizing the importance of focusing on areas where AI can have the greatest impact.

The Foundation’s emphasis on data sharing and collaboration also offers a framework for safe AI practices, Jackson added. He pointed to the need for a “data culture” where domain expertise and data are shared to maximize the benefits of AI, particularly in organizations with siloed data and a reluctance to share information.

The OpenAI Foundation has begun recruiting an executive director to oversee its grantmaking activities.
