OpenAI, DeepSeek & Moonshot Chase Billions in New AI Funding, Reports Say
OpenAI, Anthropic, Moonshot AI, and DeepSeek are aggressively chasing billions in new funding as Chinese challengers pressure U.S. leaders with lower-cost open-weight models. Moonshot AI has reached a $50 billion valuation and prepares for a Hong Kong initial public offering, while DeepSeek nears a $12 billion capital raise, Bloomberg reported.
Moonshot AI Valuation Jumps Ahead of Planned Hong Kong IPO
Moonshot AI has closed its latest private fundraising round at a valuation of roughly $50 billion, marking a sharp jump from the $31.5 billion valuation it secured earlier this year. The company is preparing for a potential Hong Kong initial public offering in the first quarter of 2027. Preparations are already underway by Moonshot to arrange discussions with prospective backers prior to the share debut, an event that could pull in up to $5 billion.
Its Kimi AI platform has established itself as one of China’s most prominent AI products. The newest Kimi K3 open-weight architecture has gone up against top American systems regarding agentic and coding capabilities while operating at much reduced expenses.

DeepSeek Nears Capital Raise With Tencent and CATL Backing
DeepSeek is close to securing at least 80 billion yuan, or about $12 billion, in its latest funding round. The company initially targeted roughly 50 billion yuan, but strong investor demand pushed the round higher. Tencent and battery giant CATL are among the major backers of this capital raise.
DeepSeek’s V4 Flash model has strengthened the lab’s reputation for delivering frontier-level performance at a fraction of the cost of U.S. rivals. International fame first found the firm early in 2025 once its R1 reasoning architecture proved that highly sophisticated artificial intelligence was buildable using dramatically smaller compute budgets than Silicon Valley had previously presumed.
U.S. AI Leaders Face Rising Financial Pressures
OpenAI is eyeing fresh funding of as much as $30 billion, while maintaining a private market valuation of $953.8 billion, according to Nasdaq Private Market data. Anthropic sits at a private market valuation of $1.32 trillion. Both U.S. companies face intensifying competition as Chinese AI labs embrace open-weight models that allow developers to download, customize, and deploy software instead of paying for closed systems.
That strategy is gaining traction in the United States as companies look to rein in soaring AI costs. A Rest of World publication in June noted that alternative Chinese architectures have turned into heavily favored choices across AI routing services like OpenRouter, alongside DeepSeek heavily expanding its portion of Vercel token consumption.
U.S. technology companies also offer open-weight models, including Meta’s Llama family, Google’s Gemma models, and Microsoft’s Phi offerings. Nonetheless, American officials alongside firms like Anthropic and OpenAI have claimed that DeepSeek and Moonshot leveraged outputs generated by U.S.-based models to accelerate their own engineering progress. Retail sentiment remains neutral for both OpenAI and Anthropic on Stocktwits as the private market valuations continue to hold.
