Johnson Eyes Major Comeback Amidst LIV Golf Commitment
Dustin Johnson, the former world No.1, is determined to maintain his presence in major championships, despite a recent dip in form and his ongoing commitment to LIV Golf. Johnson, who recently shot even par at The open, expressed his satisfaction with his current trajectory and his intention to remain with LIV Golf for several more years.
Johnson’s transition to LIV Golf in 2022 has coincided with a noticeable decline in his major championship performances. This year marked the first time he missed the cut in three majors, a stark contrast to his previous dominance. He described his putting at the PGA Championship as the “worst I’ve ever putted in my whole career as a professional.”
Despite these challenges,Johnson remains optimistic about his future in the sport. He acknowledged the need to improve his off-the-tee game but expressed confidence in his iron play and putting, stating, “I’m playing well. I mean, I was playing well coming into here. I’ve had good practice, just need to clean it up off the tee a little bit.”
The LIV Golf tour, which does not currently award world ranking points, necessitates Johnson to secure his major championship invitations through strong performances. His last top-10 finish in a major was at the 2023 U.S.Open. While he has a lifetime exemption into the Masters due to his past champion status,he required a special exemption for this year’s PGA Championship. His 10-year exemption for winning the 2016 U.S. Open expires after next year.
Johnson is eligible to qualify for the U.S. Open and The Open Championship through a provision that grants a spot to the highest-ranked LIV golfer not otherwise qualified. He also indicated his willingness to participate in a one-off qualifier if necessary, emphasizing his desire to compete in these prestigious events. “If I play well and I play how I should, I’ll be in the Open next year,” he stated.
