OnePlus CEO Resigns, Potential European Exit & Future Uncertainty
OnePlus CEO’s Departure and Return to China Fuels Uncertainty Over Global Operations
Taiwanese prosecutors have issued an arrest warrant for OnePlus co-founder and CEO Pete Lau, alleging illegal business and recruitment practices in the country, a development coinciding with his recent resignation and return to China. The timing of these events has ignited speculation about the future of the smartphone manufacturer and its commitment to international markets.
Sources indicate that OnePlus may be poised to significantly scale back its presence in several international regions, including large portions of Europe, potentially as early as April 2026. This potential withdrawal follows months of rumors regarding the company’s strategic direction, initially dismissed by OnePlus as unfounded.
Growing Credibility of Retreat Rumors
Previous reports suggested OnePlus would refocus its efforts on the affordable and mid-range smartphone segments in markets like India, while maintaining its existing operations in China. However, a now-deleted post by analyst Yogesh Brar on X (formerly Twitter) contradicted this narrative, claiming that OnePlus does not intend to prioritize budget and mid-range devices in India and is instead considering a broader retreat from global markets.
Recent reports appear to corroborate the possibility of a withdrawal, suggesting the decision is under serious consideration and could be implemented swiftly. The timing of Lau’s resignation and return to China has further fueled these concerns.
Legal Challenges in Taiwan
The arrest warrant issued in Taiwan stems from allegations that OnePlus illegally hired over 70 Taiwanese engineers since 2014, reportedly utilizing a Hong Kong-based shell company to conduct unauthorized research and development operations. Taiwan’s Cross-Strait Act prohibits Chinese companies from conducting business or hiring employees in Taiwan without explicit government approval. Two Taiwanese engineers connected to the case have also been indicted, according to reports.
Pete Lau, born Liu Zuohu on May 5, 1975, co-founded OnePlus after a decade-long career at Oppo, where he held positions ranging from hardware engineer to Vice President. He currently also serves as Chief Product Officer (CPO) at Oppo in China.
Uncertainty Surrounds European Support
The potential pullback raises questions about the future of technical support for existing OnePlus devices in affected regions, particularly in Europe. While product launches are continuing, sources suggest many upcoming products may not be available outside of China unless circumstances change.
OnePlus has stated that its business operations continue as normal and remain unaffected by the arrest warrant and ongoing investigations. However, the combination of legal challenges and leadership changes casts a shadow over the company’s long-term strategy and commitment to international consumers. The situation leaves potential buyers with increased skepticism regarding future OnePlus purchases.
