One Nation One Election: Economic Benefits and the Roadmap to 2029

June 1, 2026 Emma Walker – News Editor News

The Indian government has announced plans to revive the delimitation Bill and advance the implementation of “One Nation, One Election” (ONOE) by 2029, according to multiple reports. The initiative, which aims to consolidate state and national elections into a single cycle, has gained renewed momentum as the Union Cabinet seeks to address logistical and financial challenges linked to frequent polling. The proposal, first floated in 2019, faces scrutiny over constitutional hurdles and political sensitivities, but recent discussions suggest a strategic push to align electoral schedules across 20 states by the target year.

The Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) on ONOE has cited economic benefits, estimating that the reform could save approximately ₹7 lakh crore and boost India’s GDP growth by 1.6% annually. These figures, derived from a detailed analysis of administrative costs and resource allocation, form a key argument for the policy shift. However, the calculation has not been independently verified, and critics caution that the long-term fiscal impact remains uncertain. The JPC’s report, released earlier this year, underscores the potential for streamlined governance but stops short of addressing concerns about regional autonomy and voter engagement.

One Nation Election:

Industry representatives in Gujarat have lent support to the ONOE framework, citing significant economic losses tied to repeated elections. A sectoral study by the Apparel Resources publication highlights that the textile industry alone incurred $125 million in labor migration costs during recent polls, disrupting supply chains and productivity. Similar claims from the Gujarat Textile Association, reported by thehawk.in, suggest annual losses of ₹12,000 to ₹15,000 crore due to election-related disruptions. These figures, while specific to the state, reflect broader anxieties about the economic toll of fragmented electoral cycles.

The proposed timeline outlines a two-phase rollout, with the first stage targeting 20 states by 2029. This aligns with the government’s broader electoral reform agenda, which includes revising the delimitation process to reflect demographic changes. The Ministry of Law and Justice has emphasized that the revised delimitation Bill will ensure equitable representation while minimizing political gerrymandering. However, opposition parties have raised concerns about the centralization of electoral authority, warning that the measure could consolidate power at the expense of federal balance.

As the government moves forward, the next critical step involves consultations with state governments and legal experts to address constitutional amendments required for ONOE. A draft framework is expected to be circulated by mid-2024, with a formal legislative proposal likely to follow. Meanwhile, the debate over the policy’s feasibility continues, with stakeholders weighing its potential to reduce costs against risks of voter disengagement and administrative complexity.
