Airport Standoff: Politician Calls for Action on F-35 Base and Holiday Flights
A Member of Parliament is urging a resolution to the impasse surrounding Lelystad Airport. The situation involves the Ministry of Defense’s desire to station F-35 fighter jets and the conditions for holiday flights, creating an unnecessary deadlock that demands immediate attention and compromise.
A Call for Cooperation
Ulysse Ellian, a VVD party member, is expressing frustration over the ongoing stalemate affecting Lelystad Airport. He strongly supports both military aviation and civil air travel, advocating for the airport’s immediate opening. He emphasizes that this should be a simple matter.
Ellian is a warm supporter of both the combat devices and civil aviation. “It’s almost a no-brainer: the airport is there, it can be open,”

“I can move well in the owner of the airport that says: we did not build it for F-35s.”
—Ulysse Ellian, Member of Parliament
The Dutch government’s defense spending is projected to reach €20 billion by 2024. The expansion of military infrastructure is crucial to meeting these goals (Dutch Government).
Zeewolde’s Response and Future Plans
The politician also expressed surprise about the response from Zeewolde regarding the proposed military barracks on the Spiekweg. Ellian stated he doesn’t understand their position, especially considering their involvement in the initial phases, which he believed were harmonious.
Ellian is urging Zeewolde to actively support the expansion plans by the Defense department, which are vital given the global threats. He noted that The Hague is also paying attention to this disappointed response from the municipality.
Looking Ahead
Ellian, who entered the Lower House in 2021, faces a decision regarding running again in the upcoming October 29 elections. He shared that he is enjoying his role. He wishes to consider his options carefully. He seems inclined to continue.
