OMAHA FALLS TO SAN DIEGO STATE IN FOUR-SET CONTEST
HOUSTON – The Omaha volleyball team suffered a 3-1 defeat at the hands of San Diego State Saturday, concluding a three-match road swing. Despite a strong defensive showing and a second-set victory, the Mavericks were unable to contain the Aztecs‘ offensive pressure.
Omaha’s loss drops its record to 2-3 on the season, while san Diego State improves to 2-3. The result highlights the challenges Omaha faces as it navigates a competitive early-season schedule and prepares for conference play. The team will look to rebound at next weekend’s Cyclone Invitational, hosted by Iowa State.
The Mavericks secured a 25-21 win in the second set, fueled by a team hitting percentage of .357-their highest of the match. However, San Diego State responded with decisive victories in the third (25-16) and fourth (25-22) sets to claim the win. The first set was a back-and-forth battle, ultimately decided by the Aztecs 26-24.
Omaha’s defence proved resilient, registering 13 total blocks and 45 digs. Emily Huss, a junior middle blocker from Fairbury, Nebraska, led the blocking effort with two solo blocks and six block assists. Kali Jurgensmeier, a senior outside hitter from Wahoo, Nebraska, anchored the back row with 13 digs.
Offensively, jurgensmeier paced the Mavericks with 15 kills and a .306 hitting percentage. Senior outside hitter Morgan DeBow (Overland Park, Kansas) and sophomore right side Ella Tiarks (Treynor, Iowa) each contributed 10 kills.
Freshman setter Jordyn Anderson of Ludington, Michigan, made her collegiate debut in the fourth set.
