Olympian Gus Kenworthy Says Heated Rivalry Moved Him

British American Olympic freestyle skier Gus Kenworthy, who came out as openly gay in 2015, making history as the first extreme sports competitor to do so, said he was deeply touched by Heated Rivalry’s portrayal of queer athletes in the closet.

In a recent,in-depth interview with The New Yorker before his fourth Olympic Games in Milan,Kenworthy discussed the similarities between the popular Crave Canada series and his own experiences – both personally and as a public figure.

“Initially, I didn’t get the hype,” he explained. “It was entertaining, but seemed a bit scandalous. I thought, ‘Wow, everyone’s really into this!’ Like, why not just watch porn?” People kept telling me,
