Ohio Steelworkers Hear Vance Pitch Controversial Tax Bill

Vance Criticizes Sykes‘ Absence at Steel Mill Event,Cites “Big Stunning Bill”

Vice President JD Vance publicly criticized Congresswoman Emilia Sykes for her absence at a recent steel mill event, attributing her non-attendance to her opposition to the “Big Beautiful Bill.” Vance asserted that Sykes’ stance prevented her constituents from celebrating tax reductions on tips and overtime, and also what he described as the highest increase in take-home pay in 60 years.

The “Big Beautiful Bill,” as referred to by Vance, has drawn important concern from Ohio Democrats, including those in Sykes’ 13th congressional district. The Democratic Congressional campaign Committee (DCCC) has warned that the legislation could negatively impact Ohio by threatening healthcare access, increasing healthcare costs, raising electricity prices, and jeopardizing access to food assistance programs.

A DCCC spokesperson, Katie Smith, characterized Vance’s visit as a “desperate attempt to lie to Ohioans” about the bill’s detrimental effects on working families. Smith further stated that Washington Republicans are attempting to defend their record of cutting medicaid to benefit the wealthy, emphasizing that Congresswoman Sykes consistently prioritizes her community. Congresswoman Sykes has publicly responded to Vance’s remarks, accusing him of misrepresenting her position.
