Sunday, October 5th, 2025: Shopping Restrictions Remain in Place
Warsaw, Poland – Polish consumers planning shopping trips on sunday, October 5th, 2025, should be aware that a nationwide trade ban will be in effect. Major retailers including Lidl, Biedronka, Kaufland, and shopping malls will be closed, as the current regulations limiting commercial activity on Sundays remain unchanged.
The restrictions stem from the Act on Sunday and holidays, adopted in 2018, which permits full trade operations only on a limited number of designated Sundays each year. Despite ongoing discussions and draft amendments proposing greater liberalization – including potential allowances for two commercial Sundays per month – these changes have not been enacted. This means shoppers face a lengthy wait until the next permitted shopping Sunday on December 7th, 2025.
Currently, only select establishments are exempt from the ban.Consumers will still be able to shop at smaller, independent stores, Żabka convenience stores, gas stations, and through online retailers.
For 2025, the eight designated commercial Sundays are: January 26, April 13, April 27, June 29, August 31, December 7, december 14, and December 21. The 2026 calendar will mirror 2025, with eight permitted shopping Sundays: January 25, March 29, April 26, June 28, August 30, December 6, December 13, and December 20.
Recent political developments, including the appointment of Karol Nawrocki as president representing Law and Justice, suggest that meaningful changes to the existing law are unlikely in the near future. Proposed amendments that would have allowed trade on all Sundays except the first and third of the month, with guaranteed double pay and a day off for employees, remain stalled.
