Joseph John “Joe” Aberle, an Air Force veteran, University of North Dakota philosophy graduate, and Great Falls newspaper publisher, passed away on June 26, 2026, at the age of 89, according to obituary records published by the Great Falls Tribune. Born in Zeeland, North Dakota, on May 17, 1937, his life spanned decades of community involvement in Montana and North Dakota, leaving behind a legacy in publishing, advertising, and civic life.

Early Life, Military Service, and Education

Growing up in North Dakota, Aberle attended Bismarck High School before enlisting in the United States Air Force. He served as a flight mechanic from 1955 to 1959. That military path brought him to Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls, Montana, sparking an enduring affinity for the state’s outdoor landscape.

Following his discharge, Aberle pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of North Dakota in 1964. On August 11, 1962, he married Lillian Mattern.

Publishing Career and Community Engagement in Great Falls

Returning to Great Falls after completing his degree, Aberle initially worked in sales and advertising for KFBB-TV. He later transitioned into independent publishing, founding two distinct regional publications: The Consumer’s Press and The Montana AG Almanac.

Beyond his business ventures, Aberle integrated himself into the civic fabric of Great Falls. According to the Great Falls Tribune, he maintained active memberships in the Advertising “AD” Club, the C.M. Russell Art Auction, the Meadowlark Country Club, and Our Lady of Lourdes Church. His philanthropic interests focused heavily on supporting law enforcement personnel, first responders, and military veterans.

Survivors and Memorial Services

Aberle is survived by his son, Joseph J. Aberle II of Missoula, Montana; his daughter, COL (Ret.) Josslyn L. Aberle of Colorado Springs, Colorado; and his granddaughter, Amanda R. Aberle of Great Falls. He is also survived by his brothers Michael, David, Richard, and Patrick, as well as his sisters Zerline, Margie, and Helen, along with close family friends Dan and Sue Della Rossa of Great Falls.

Funeral services are scheduled for 1:00 p.m. on Friday, August 21, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bismarck, North Dakota. Burial will follow at 3:00 p.m. at the Mandan, North Dakota State VA Cemetery, with a reception hosted afterward at the Aberle Farm in Menoken, North Dakota.
