Obiena’s Performance Signals Medal Potential at Nagoya Asian Games
Polish athlete Armand Duplantis secured gold in the men’s pole vault at the World Athletics Indoor Championships in Toruń, Poland, on Sunday, while Filipino pole vaulter Ernest John Obiena finished tied for ninth, according to reports from the Philippine Star.
Obiena, 30, cleared 5.50m and 5.70m without issue but was unable to surpass 5.85m in three attempts. He finished alongside Chris Nilsen of the United States, both with a best vault of 5.70m. Duplantis won with a jump of 6.25m, demonstrating a dominant performance throughout the competition, skipping bars at multiple heights.
The performance comes after Obiena achieved a significant milestone earlier this year, completing an “Asian slam” of major regional titles with a gold medal at the Asian Indoor Athletics Championships in China on February 7th, as reported by ABS-CBN News and Rappler. This victory added to his existing gold medals from the Asian Games (2022) and Asian Athletics Championships (2019, 2023, and 2025). Obiena described the Asian Indoor title as the “missing piece” in his collection.
Despite not reaching the podium in Poland, Obiena’s performance is viewed as a positive indicator ahead of the Nagoya Asian Games later this year. John Cabang Tolentino, Jessica Laurance, and Zion Corrales Nelson also competed for the Philippines at the World Athletics Indoor Championships, but none secured a podium finish. Tolentino finished 30th in the 60m hurdles, while Laurance and Corrales Nelson placed 37th and 42nd respectively in the 60m sprints.
Obiena’s season best remains at 5.78m, achieved at the Internationales Springer-Meeting Cottbus in Germany in January. He is currently ranked 12th in the world. The Philippine contingent now prepares for the Asian Games, where they will seek to build on their recent performances.
