OB Emergency Care: When to Go to the OBED | Guide

Hillcrest Medical Center in Tulsa, Oklahoma, has opened a dedicated Obstetric Emergency Department (OBED), the hospital announced Monday. The modern department is designed to address emergency situations related to pregnancy and postpartum care, offering specialized medical expertise for critical cases.

The opening of the OBED at Hillcrest Medical Center follows similar initiatives at other hospitals across the country, including Aspirus Wausau Hospital in Wisconsin and Mercy Health-St. Rita’s in Ohio, both of which recently launched their own dedicated obstetric emergency departments. Aspirus Wausau’s department operates 24/7, serving expecting and postpartum patients, according to a statement released by the hospital.

These new departments are equipped to handle a range of obstetric emergencies, providing a focused and specialized environment for both expectant mothers and their babies. The specialized care offered in OBEDs is intended to improve outcomes in critical situations, addressing conditions that require immediate medical intervention.

Mercy Health-St. Rita’s highlighted the on-site nature of its new department, emphasizing the convenience and accessibility of emergency pregnancy care for patients in the region. The establishment of these dedicated units reflects a growing recognition of the unique and often urgent needs of pregnant patients experiencing medical emergencies.

The launch of these OBEDs comes as hospitals nationwide continue to adapt to evolving standards of care and increasing demands for specialized maternal health services. The departments aim to provide a higher level of care for complex obstetric cases, ensuring that patients receive timely and appropriate medical attention during critical moments of their pregnancies and postpartum periods.
